The Institute of Business Management (IoBM), in collaboration with OPEN Karachi, hosted a Fireside Chat with Mr. Malik Sarwar, Founding Partner and Managing Director, Wealth Management Global Leader Group, USA, on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The session was jointly organized by IoBM’s College of Business Management (CBM) and Entrepreneurship and Management Excellence Center (EMEC), in collaboration with OPEN Karachi. Ms. Shaha Tariq, Head of EMEC and Advisor to the President, IoBM, moderated the session. The event was attended by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kashif, Dean CBM; Head of Departments, Faculty Members, and Students. Dr. Shagufta Ghauri, Associate Dean, College of Business Management, IoBM, played an instrumental role in organizing this session. Titled “Becoming Significant in the World Today,” the Fireside Chat explored the meaning of success beyond academic qualifications and the journey towards becoming a valuable and meaningful contributor to society and the professional world. In her opening remarks, Ms. Shaha Tariq highlighted how technology has made the world increasingly interconnected while also creating new challenges, including environmental concerns, geopolitical conflicts, technological disruption, economic uncertainty, social change, artificial intelligence and rapid digital transformation. Against this backdrop, she raised an important question for the audience: How can individuals remain relevant in a rapidly changing world? She also emphasized the importance of understanding one’s individual value and identifying ways to strengthen one’s contribution to society and the world. Engaging with the audience, Mr. Malik Sarwar began by inviting participants to reflect on why they had attended the session and what they hoped to gain from it, whether success, wisdom, personal growth or the desire to become a better version of themselves. He emphasized that the ability to help others begins with personal growth and self-understanding. Underscoring the importance of introspection, he remarked, “The mirror is more important than the window,” highlighting the need to look within before looking outward. Mr. Malik Sarwar identified character and integrity, competence, and compassion as three important elements of success. He explained that character and integrity define who we are, competence enables us to excel in our chosen field, while compassion allows us to share our knowledge, experience and wisdom with others. He also emphasized the importance of curiosity, encouraging participants to continuously ask questions and, most importantly, to begin with “Why?” Mr. Malik Sarwar encouraged students to “become the CEO of your brand” by consciously developing their personality, character and career. He emphasized that professional growth is not limited to academic qualifications or technical competence, but also involves building a strong personal identity, developing the right values and taking ownership of one’s career journey. The discussion explored the importance of developing problem-solving, advisory, resilience and decision-making skills, particularly in an increasingly complex and uncertain professional environment. The conversation also examined the importance of delivering exceptional client experiences, with examples from organizations such as Amazon, Disney and Ritz-Carlton. Other areas discussed included the role of women in wealth and asset management, ESG, social impact and responsible business. A recurring theme of the conversation was the need to look beyond conventional definitions of career success and focus on the value individuals can create for others. Mr. Malik Sarwar emphasized that “Success to Significance” should become part of one’s life, explaining that success is for yourself, while significance is for others. He encouraged students to become “go-givers” and contribute to society by sharing their time, knowledge and abilities, including through volunteering and other forms of community engagement. The discussion thus highlighted a progression from “career to character to significance,” encouraging participants to view professional success not only in terms of personal achievement but also in terms of the positive value they create for others. The Fireside Chat provided students with an opportunity to engage with a global business leader and gain insights into leadership, entrepreneurship, professional growth and the changing business landscape. The interactive discussion connected academic learning with the skills, mindset, curiosity and sense of purpose needed to navigate a rapidly changing world. The session concluded with a reflection on the role individuals can play in creating meaningful value beyond the university, emphasizing that the journey from success to significance involves not only building a career, but also developing character and giving back to society. Speaking on the occasion, President IoBM Mr. Talib Karim recalled that the late Founder President had visited the campus only a month before his passing to attend the inauguration of the Shahjehan Syed Karim Center of Excellence (SSKCE) building. He reflected on the challenge of carrying forward the vision and legacy of his father, saying that IoBM is continuing to work towards fulfilling the dreams he had envisioned for the institution. Mr. Talib Karim appreciated the efforts of the faculty, Heads of Departments and the wider IoBM community in sustaining the legacy of the late Founder President. He expressed hope that the institution would continue to build on his vision and achievements. He also announced that a book chronicling the life of the late Founder President is in its final stages and is expected to be revealed in the second week of October. The book has been authored by Ejaz Wasay, with the writing process having commenced during the lifetime of Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim. Ms. Sabina Mohsin, Vice President FHE and Chief Advisor IoBM, also paid tribute to the late Founder President, reflecting on his life, values and legacy. She noted that having his final resting place on the IoBM campus was in accordance with his wishes and described it as a matter of pride for the Karim family. She also highlighted the conferment of the Sitara-i-Imtiaz upon him as a significant honour. Recalling the ideals associated with his life and achievements, she referred to Allama Iqbal’s famous verse, “Khudi ko kar buland itna, ke har taqdeer se pehle, Khuda bande se khud pooche, bata teri raza kya hai”, underscoring the values of aspiration, self-belief and perseverance. The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony held in honour of the Late Founder President, Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim. Colleagues whose birthdays fell between June and September also joined the celebration and participated in the cake-cutting ceremony, adding to the spirit of togetherness and camaraderie.

The College of Computer Science and Information Systems (CCSIS), Institute of Business Management (IoBM), in collaboration with the IEEE IoBM Student Branch, successfully hosted the second edition of TechNova’26, its flagship annual technology event, under the theme “Connect. Create. Conquer.” Recognized as one of Karachi’s prominent inter-university technology events, TechNova’26 brought together more than 500 student participants representing 36 universities and colleges. The event provided an engaging platform for young innovators to demonstrate their technical expertise, exchange ideas, collaborate with peers, and interact with professionals from academia and industry. An esteemed panel of judges for each competition, drawn from diverse academic institutions and industry sectors, enriched the evaluation process with their extensive knowledge and experience. Spearheaded by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abbas, Dean, CCSIS, and directed by Dr. Khalid Mahboob, Director, TechNova’26, the event reaffirmed IoBM’s commitment to strengthening industry-academia linkages and promoting youth-led technological innovation in Pakistan. This year’s edition featured seven competitive modules aligned with emerging developments in technology. Established competitions, including FYP Warriors and Startup Launchpad, were complemented by newly introduced modules such as Capture the Flag, Datathon, and Agentic AI, which challenged participants in cybersecurity, data science, and next-generation artificial intelligence systems. Prompt Engineering returned for its second consecutive year, while Maths Mania was expanded into Junior and Advanced categories to accommodate participants with varying levels of expertise. Cyber Security Summit 2026, Held on the Sidelines of TechNova’26 As part of TechNova’26, CCSIS, in collaboration with the IEEE Student Branch, also hosted the Cyber Security Summit 2026, under the theme “Cyber Security in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: Securing Innovation, Building Trust, and Defending the Digital Future.” The Summit brought together senior leaders and decision-makers from academia and the technology industry to discuss the evolving cyber threat landscape, reinforcing TechNova’s broader role as a platform designed to bridge the gap between industry and academia. Guests included Prof. Dr. Tariq Rahim Soomro, Rector, IoBM; Mr. Bilal Elahi, CEO and Co-Founder, Beenco Labs; Mr. Raheel Iqbal, Director, Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC); Syed Azmat, CEO, Cybersoft Technologies; Mr. Farhan Arif, Head of Technology and Digital Transformation, Medics Laboratories; Mr. Fahad Ahmed Khan, Senior Cyber Security Consultant, TrendAI; and Mr. Zeeshan Ali, Manager, Information Security, Thal Limited. During the session, panelists explored AI-powered governance and the future of cyber security, with discussion questions covering the current state of AI, cyber security, emerging technologies, awareness around cyber security, and privacy and consensus-building. Panelists discussed the strategic future of cyber security and AI, along with the operational factors and challenges involved, and were of the view that adopting AI is no longer optional but mandatory. They reached a common consensus that innovation must be implemented responsibly, with people made aware of how to use AI tools effectively and how to acquire complete, reliable data. They stressed the need for skilled employees, noting that humans who work in collaboration with AI will outpace those who remain unfamiliar with it, and discussed the current state of AI, the threats it presents, and the ways it is transforming industries. On cyber security specifically, panelists agreed it is a threat the entire world is facing and one that urgently needs to be addressed. The Cyber Security Summit 2026 provided a valuable platform for academia and industry to come together, reinforcing IoBM’s commitment to preparing students and professionals for the security challenges of an increasingly AI-driven future. Closing Ceremony The Closing Ceremony of TechNova’26 was honored by the gracious presence of IoBM President, Mr. Talib Syed Karim, who attended as the Chief Guest and celebrated the achievements of the event’s talented participants. The event was organized under the guidance of Dr. Shagufta Rafiq, Associate Dean, CBM, IoBM, with facilitation by Alumni Affairs and MARCOM . As part of his visit to IoBM, President IoBM, Mr. Talib Karim, welcomed distinguished alumnus Mr. Muhammad Ali Tariq and his wife, Mrs. Abeer Tariq, an IoBM alumna, to the President’s Office. President Karim congratulated Mr. Ali Tariq on his distinguished international career and appreciated his continued association with his alma mater. Mr. Muhammad Ali Tariq brings over two decades of experience in the global consumer goods industry. Following his MBA from CBM in 2008, he went on to hold leadership roles across distribution, commercial strategy, route-to-market, and business transformation at leading organizations including Nestlé, FrieslandCampina, Reckitt, and Red Bull. He is known for driving sustainable growth through customer-centric strategies, operational excellence, and innovative business practices, qualities that have shaped his rise to senior leadership on the global stage. The session was as much a homecoming as it was a talk. Mr. Ali Tariq reflected that it was at IoBM where everything for him began, both personally and professionally. He and his wife, Mrs. Abeer Tariq, also an IoBM alumna, took a campus tour before the session to revisit the memories they had built during their time at the institute. Speaking to students, Mr. Ali Tariq advised them to begin their careers swiftly after completing their bachelor’s degrees, without taking unnecessary gaps, and encouraged them to pursue their passions while remaining mindful of their professional prospects. He walked the audience through his own journey, from being a student at IoBM to reaching his current professional stature at Red Bull Canada. He told students that the first ten years of a corporate career are a learning curve, during which titles, pay, and company names matter far less than the learning itself. He advised them not to expect managers to always provide solutions, but to build a solution-oriented mindset of their own. Attitude, he said, is what makes a professional truly stand out, and success requires thinking with the next ten years in mind. Reflecting on leadership, Mr. Ali Tariq said the journey to the top is often a lonely one, and that attitude defines it more than anything else. Knowing where you want to be in life, he said, is the starting point, and it takes courage to follow through on that vision. He encouraged students to fail fast, fail cheap, and never shy away from experimentation, noting that life is inherently unpredictable in both personal and professional spheres. He said opportunities rarely present themselves; they must be tested and pursued, and failures should be treated as part of the process, not the end of it. He also urged students to become comfortable with ambiguity, to never see themselves as inferior, and to remember that family is where life’s journey begins. Adaptability, he said, is essential. He closed the topic by noting that career growth brings a shift in identity, from individual contributor to manager to leader, and that true leadership lies not in commanding a team but in delegating effectively and building strong teams. Turning to the future of work, Mr. Ali Tariq said artificial intelligence is far more than a buzzword. It is actively reshaping operational systems and creating new challenges for the workforce, and professionals who learn to manage AI effectively, rather than compete with it, will shape the future of business. On family businesses, he advised students to first spend at least two years in a corporate organization before joining a family enterprise, to gain a genuine feel for the professional world. In his closing remarks, Mr. Ali Tariq advised students to stay grounded, remember where they began, and remain humble. He urged them not to fear failure, saying life offers lessons in many forms, and encouraged them to keep looking ahead with confidence, adding that giving up is never an option. The floor was then opened for a question-and-answer session, during which students engaged Mr. Ali Tariq on career planning, industry transitions, and leadership challenges. The session gave students a valuable experiential learning perspective, connecting classroom theory with real-world corporate insight from an alumnus who has walked that path himself.

The Global and Regional Studies Center (GRSC) at the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) hosted the launch of Blood and Toil, authored by Brigadier Tariq Khalil, SJ, SI(M), IS Gallantry (Bar), (Retired), on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Blood and Toil is a memoir that chronicles Brigadier Tariq Khalil’s military career while highlighting the values of discipline, sacrifice, resilience, ethical leadership, and national duty. Drawing on his personal experiences, the book offers readers a firsthand perspective on military life and a deeper understanding of Pakistan’s armed forces and the principles that underpin effective leadership. The event brought together academics, professionals, retired military officers, and students to discuss the book and its reflections on leadership, service, governance, and national responsibility. A panel of distinguished reviewers comprising Lt. Gen. Moinuddin Haider, Col. Mukhtar Butt, Mr. Manzar Naqvi, and Dr. Zaituna Shah shared their perspectives on the book. Representing IoBM at the event were Mr. Talib Syed Karim, President; Prof. Dr. Tariq Rahim Soomro, Rector; Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kashif, Dean, CBM; Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abbas, Dean, CCSIS, and Ambassador G. R. Baluch, Director GRSC, along with faculty members, heads of departments, and students. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Talib Syed Karim said Blood and Toil would enrich research and learning at IoBM by offering valuable insights into leadership, governance, and national affairs. Referring to developments in South Asia, he said the book encourages reflection on leadership, governance, and the role of young people in national development. He added that such experiences offer valuable lessons for policymakers and future leaders. Brigadier Tariq Khalil (Retired) described Blood and Toil as the story of his life, beginning in the pre-Partition era and covering his experiences during Pakistan’s conflicts with India, including the 1971 war. He said the book is a compilation of articles and reflections documenting different phases of his military career and the country’s history, making it a useful reference for historians, researchers, and professionals. He also spoke about the changing geopolitical environment, observing that Pakistan is navigating a transition towards an emerging multipolar world and must prepare itself for the challenges ahead. Reviewing the book, Lt. Gen. Moinuddin Haider said the generation that witnessed Partition and Pakistan’s early wars is gradually fading, making it essential to preserve their experiences for future generations. He noted that Brigadier Tariq Khalil’s experience in the military, public service, and the corporate sector gives the book a distinctive perspective. He observed that many of the issues raised in the author’s newspaper columns nearly five decades ago remain relevant today and appreciated his efforts to encourage informed national debate. Col. Mukhtar Butt said the global order has shifted from a unipolar to a multipolar system, creating new geopolitical realities. Stressing the importance of regional cooperation, he said Pakistan must strengthen relations with neighbouring countries while promoting national unity, internal stability, and effective governance to address future challenges. Mr. Manzar Naqvi, Editor-in-Chief of Financial Daily, described Blood and Toil as an important historical account that documents Pakistan’s journey through the author’s personal experiences. He praised Brigadier Tariq Khalil for preserving significant moments in the country’s history and expressed his appreciation for the author’s continued contributions. Dr. Zaituna Shah said the book presents a comprehensive account of the regional and geopolitical developments that have shaped Pakistan’s history. She noted that it provides readers with valuable insights into national and international affairs through the author’s personal observations and experiences. Earlier, in his welcome address, Ambassador G. R. Baluch said that by hosting book launches, IoBM continues to uphold the vision and values on which the Institute was founded. Referring to the late founder, Mr. Shahjehan S. Karim, he said universities should not only impart education but also promote critical thinking, knowledge creation, and meaningful contributions to society. He added that IoBM’s book launch programme provides a platform for scholars, diplomats, policymakers, military professionals, journalists, and students to engage in intellectual dialogue and exchange ideas. Referring to the author, Ambassador Baluch said Brigadier Tariq Khalil writes from firsthand experience, enabling readers to gain a deeper understanding of the events, decisions, and historical developments that have shaped Pakistan. The Career Development Center (CDC) at the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) hosted its annual HR Networking Lunch on Thursday, July 16, 2026, bringing together human resource professionals from a wide range of industries to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry and discuss the changing needs of today’s workforce. Held under the theme, “Industry-Academia Co-Creation: Building Agile Curricula for the Digital Economy,” the event provided a platform for HR professionals and academicians to discuss how academic curricula can better prepare students for the future of work. A key question that guided the conversation was: When industry professionals look at today’s graduates, what is the one skill gap they consistently observe? Welcoming the guests, Ms. Juveria Baig, Head of the Career Development Center, emphasized the importance of building strong partnerships with industry to prepare students for the future workplace. The graduating startups included Raabta AI, KhelKud, Courtify, Cruze Technologies Pvt. Ltd., WedX, ForestEdge, and CloudNOOE. Among those present were Mr. Talib Karim, President, IoBM; Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abbas, Dean, College of Computer Science and Information Systems (CCSIS); and Dr. Seema Ansari, Director, Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), along with industry leaders, mentors, alumni, faculty members, startup founders, and invited guests. The ceremony celebrated innovation, entrepreneurship, and the achievements of the graduating cohort while bringing together key stakeholders from academia and industry. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Talib Karim highlighted IoBM’s longstanding commitment to entrepreneurship, tracing its journey from the Shell Tameer program, now known as Wafi Energy Pakistan. Referring to the growing impact of artificial intelligence on industries and the job market, he said it also presents new opportunities for entrepreneurs to become job creators rather than job seekers. He encouraged startup founders to apply their knowledge and skills to generate employment opportunities and contribute to Pakistan’s economic development. He also underscored IoBM’s commitment to entrepreneurship through the introduction of a dedicated academic degree program in the field. Mr. Talib Karim praised the success of startups emerging from SSKIC, citing Creative 3D as an example of a venture that has successfully expanded into Middle Eastern markets through innovation and perseverance. Emphasizing the importance of ethical values in entrepreneurship, he commended the efforts of Mr. Raza Abbas and the SSKIC team for earning international recognition. He noted that IoBM has been appointed as the National Chapter of the UNESCO Entrepreneurship Education Network (EE-Net), while Mr. Raza Abbas represents Pakistan within the UNESCO EE Network at international entrepreneurship education forums in countries including China, Uzbekistan, and Indonesia. The five-week internship is designed to provide students with practical exposure to campus life and professional work through hands-on projects, mentorship, workshops, and field visits. The program is jointly organized by the Career Development Center (CDC), Shahjehan Syed Karim Incubation Center (SSKIC) and the Marketing & Communications (MARCOM). The book explores how entrepreneurial communities in Pakistan and beyond sustain social cohesion amid changing economic conditions. Speakers at the event noted that it serves as a valuable resource for students, researchers, policymakers, and development practitioners interested in community-driven approaches to sustainable social and economic development. The event was hosted by Dr. Bazla Mukhtar, Assistant Professor, Entrepreneurship Department, CBM. Proceedings began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Hafiz Humayun Baig. The ceremony was attended by IoBM’s senior management, including Mr. Talib S. Maulana Bashir Farooq Qadri, Founder and Chairman of Saylani Welfare International Trust, reflected on the historical roots of the Memon community and the evolution of its entrepreneurial spirit. Mr. Afzal Chamadia, President of Chamadia Group, highlighted the role of IT parks in nurturing future entrepreneurs and encouraged young individuals to take calculated risks. Dr. Abdul Wahab Suri, Head of the Philosophy Department at the University of Karachi, observed that the book critically examines three communities by analyzing their internal dynamics and linking them to contemporary academic discourse. He appreciated how the work transforms lived experiences into a structured scholarly contribution grounded in academic literature. The Institute of Business Management (IoBM) hosted the launch of “North Korea: Never Ending Tragedy”, authored by Ambassador Syed Hasan Habib, on Saturday, April 18, 2026. Ambassador Syed Hasan Habib, a former Ambassador of Pakistan to North Korea, is currently serving as a Senior Fellow at IoBM. The event was attended by IoBM’s senior leadership, including President, Mr. Talib Karim; Rector, Prof. Dr. Tariq Rahim Soomro, along with faculty members, management, and students. Representatives from the Thai Consulate and Pakistan Council on Foreign Relations were also present. Addressing the audience, Mr. Talib Karim, highlighted that the Institute has significantly benefited from the engagement of former ambassadors. He shared that nearly ten books across diverse genres have been published over the past eighteen months with IoBM’s support. He further noted that students have learned extensively from ambassadors who have contributed to teaching at the Institute. In his opening remarks, Ambassador G. R. Baluch, Director at IoBM’s Global and Regional Studies Center (GRSC), commended Ambassador Syed Hasan Habib for his courage in undertaking the work. Reflecting on the author’s experience, he described it as both emotionally and morally challenging, adding that the book goes beyond a scholarly exercise and should encourage deeper reflection. Prof. Dr. Tanweer Khalid, Secretary General of the Pakistan Institute of International Affairs, remarked that the author’s work offers a valuable contribution by exploring North Korea’s evolution from ancient to modern times. He further noted that the book addresses the country’s isolationist policies, with each chapter dedicated to a distinct aspect. Ambassador Alam Brohi remarked that, within the Foreign Service of Pakistan, postings such as Sudan and North Korea are regarded as especially difficult due to social isolation and limited facilities. He noted that the author has vividly captured the harsh realities of North Korea and praised Ambassador Syed Hasan Habib’s resilience, both during his service and in his continued academic contributions. Prof. Dr. Riaz Ahmed Shaikh, Dean, Social Sciences & Education Department, SZABIST, observed that the book offers a concise account of North Korea’s history. He highlighted the difficulty of capturing such reflections and commended IoBM for bringing the work to publication. He further outlined North Korea’s historical trajectory in relation to its geopolitical strategy. A prize distribution ceremony for emerging start-ups was recently held at the Federation House, bringing together leading voices from industry and academia to highlight the role of youth-led innovation in driving Pakistan’s economic growth. From a highly competitive pool of 80 startups across the province, only five were selected for awards. In addition, IoBM’s financial aid initiatives aim to remove obstacles created by economic disparity, ensuring that talented students are not limited by financial constraints. Through these efforts, the Institute actively supports the reduction of inequality (SDG 10) and contributes to poverty alleviation (SDG 1). With aspirations in their eyes and determination in their stride, students of the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) attended the annual Career Fair with a goal to secure their professional future. Across the venue, HR professionals from 117 leading organizations engaged with emerging talent and identify future contributors to their industries. In that defining moment at IoBM, the gap between classroom learning and corporate reality visibly began to close. This was the aura during the annual Career Fair hosted by IoBM on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Leading exhibitors representing a broad spectrum of industries, from IT services and pharmaceuticals to consumer goods, fast-food chains, personal care, banking and financial services, media, among others came together under one roof. Each stall told a different story of growth, innovation, and demand, offering students not only exposure to diverse career pathways but also a clearer understanding of the evolving dynamics shaping today’s professional landscape. The occasion was graced by IoBM Chancellor Bashir Janmohammad and Zubair Tufail, Chairman and CEO of Tufail Chemical Industries Limited. Members of IoBM’s senior management also graced the occasion. Organized by IoBM’s Career Development Centre (CDC), the Career Fair is designed to facilitate a structured transition from academia to the professional world. HR leaders and corporate representatives engaged directly with final-year students, providing insights into recruitment processes, competency frameworks, and industry expectations. Conversations extended beyond immediate vacancies to long-term career planning, emerging roles, and in-demand skill sets, encouraging students to strategically align their academic preparation with contemporary market realities. Participating organizations expressed strong enthusiasm for IoBM’s Career Fair, describing it as an effective channel for identifying and engaging with emerging talent. Representatives appreciated the opportunity to interact directly with students in an environment that fosters curiosity, ambition, and professional readiness. Exhibitors noted that the Career Fair enabled meaningful dialogue rather than routine recruitment exchanges. They were particularly encouraged by the level of preparation demonstrated by students, who asked pertinent and well-informed questions about career progression, required competencies, and long-term professional growth. Such interactions, they observed, reflected a maturing workforce that is not only seeking employment but also striving to make strategic career decisions. Representatives remarked that engaging with students at this stage allows organizations to better understand the aspirations, expectations, and skill sets of the next generation.
